Month 1 - Getting Started
The first month is all about getting comfortable with the instrument. Your child will learn the basics, including posture, technique, rhythm and their first notes or chords. They’ll also begin learning how to read simple music.
Month 2 - Building the Basics
As they become more familiar with their instrument, they’ll start developing their technique and coordination. They may be able to play simple exercises and short pieces, while beginning to feel more confident during lessons.
Month 3 - Playing Their First Songs
This is often a really exciting milestone! Your child will begin putting the skills they've learned together to play recognisable songs and pieces. Hearing something that actually sounds like music can be a huge confidence boost.
Month 4 - Growing in Confidence
By this point, your child may be ready to tackle slightly more challenging pieces. They’ll continue developing their technique, rhythm and musical expression, while becoming more comfortable playing in front of others.
Month 5 - Becoming More Independent
Your child will start taking more ownership of their learning. They may be able to identify mistakes, practise tricky sections and work through parts of a piece with less help from their teacher.
Month 6 - Looking Back at Their Progress
Six months in, your child may have several songs under their belt, a stronger understanding of their instrument and much more confidence in their abilities.
But remember: there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline. Some children progress quickly, while others need more time to develop certain skills. What matters most is that they're learning, building confidence and enjoying making music.
