How to Keep Up Music Learning Over the School Holidays

The school holidays are the perfect time to relax, recharge and enjoy a break from the usual routine. But while lessons may pause, music doesn't have to.

Keeping up with music over the holidays helps children build confidence, retain the skills they've worked so hard to develop, and return to lessons ready to make even more progress. The good news is that it doesn't have to feel like practice.

Here are a few simple ways to keep music fun during the break:

  • Play little and often. Just 10–15 minutes a few times a week is enough to keep skills fresh.
  • Let them choose the music. Playing favourite songs or film soundtracks can be much more motivating than repeating exercises.
  • Listen together. Explore different genres, attend local concerts or watch live performances online. Listening is an important part of musical development.
  • Perform for family and friends. An informal performance at home can boost confidence and give children something to work towards.
  • Get creative. Encourage improvisation, songwriting or experimenting with rhythms and melodies. There are no wrong answers when creativity takes the lead.

The holidays are also a great time to remind children why they started learning music in the first place. Without the pressure of schoolwork, they can simply enjoy playing, discovering new pieces and expressing themselves

At Rythmico, we believe music should be inspiring, enjoyable and part of everyday life. Keeping lessons and practice going over the holidays - even in small ways - helps children return feeling confident, motivated and excited to continue their musical journey.
